Meet Mr. Phillip Miller on our History page. A hardy Scotsman with a botanical sensitivity.
Aloe plants with orange flowers are commonly found in New Zealand. They are however not edible and are toxic. They should not be confused with another species of aloe called Arborescens which at a glance is easily mistaken. Arborescens has a striking red flower. It is not found commonly in NZ. There are unsub-
stanciated claims of its cancer curing and medicinal ability but this a highly controversial claim.
The common orange flowering aloes mentioned have little or no use for skin treatment. They do not heal burns, they only sooth them and there is not accounts of cancers being healed. Most aloes are toxic and can cause kidney and liver problems if consumed.
Only use aloe plants that are botanically labelled or identified as Aloe Barbadensis or Aloe Barbadensis-Miller.

There are many varieties of aloe throughout the world. Of these only three have the Health properties the name Aloe Vera is renown. Aloe Barbadensis and Aloe Barbadensis-Miller are the varieties used throughout the Health Care, Skin Care and Cosmetic Industry world wide and are the only beneficial varieties. The variety Arborescens. is not used for a few reasons - it is not suitable for ingestion (the aloin from the skin can cause liver and kidney problems after a reasonable period of use), it causes skin irritation to some users, it is difficult and very laborious to harvest and fillet for gel, and finally it is not as generally as beneficial as the two Barbadensis varieties.
